How to read a Wacker Neuson serial number

Wacker Neuson compact machines carry a serial number on a type label. The format changed in 2012, and the year is read from the label, not decoded from a fixed position. Here is how it works.

Where to find it

On Wacker Neuson compact excavators the type label carrying the serial number is on the front right of the machine chassis, at the control-stand level. If it is not there, check the driver’s-side dashboard. Clean any dirt or paint that may hide the stamped number, and confirm the label matches any stamped number.

How the format works

Machines built before 2012 carry a shorter 7 or 8 digit serial number. From 2012, Wacker Neuson moved to a 17-character serial number. Unlike a standard vehicle VIN, Wacker Neuson's 17-character format uses its own structure (manufacturer code, machine type letter, internal model, a check character, production site, then the sequential serial), so the model year is not read from a single fixed character.

Finding the exact year and model

Read the year and model from the type label or the machine documentation. If the label is missing or unclear, give the full serial number to an authorized Wacker Neuson dealer, who can confirm the model and build year from their records.

Frequently asked

Where is the serial number on a Wacker Neuson excavator?

On the type label on the front right of the machine chassis at the control-stand level, or on the driver’s-side dashboard.

Can you tell the year from a Wacker Neuson serial number?

Not from a single fixed character. Machines from 2012 use a 17-character serial with a manufacturer-specific structure, so read the year from the type label or documentation, or confirm with a dealer.

What changed with Wacker Neuson serial numbers in 2012?

Before 2012 machines used a shorter 7 or 8 digit serial. From 2012 Wacker Neuson moved to a 17-character serial number, though it does not follow the standard vehicle VIN year-in-position-10 layout.
