How to read a Volvo serial number

Volvo construction equipment uses an informative product identification plate that lists more than just a number. Here is where to find it and how to read it.

Where to find it

Volvo's product identification plate is usually on the right side of the upper frame. By machine:

  • Excavators: on the right side of the upper structure near the cab, with the number also on the front left of the cab.
  • Wheel loaders: on the curb side, behind the right front wheel.
  • Articulated haulers: on the main frame near the front axle, or on the chassis plate inside the cab.

What the plate tells you

The Volvo product identification plate is unusually informative. It typically lists the model designation, serial number, machine weight, engine power, manufacturing year, and CE approval. That means the plate itself gives you the model and the year, which is exactly what you want to confirm before buying.

Modern Volvo machines also carry a 17-character PIN, and MachVerity reads the year from a standard PIN and identifies the make where it is registered.

Confirming the details

Start with the plate, since it lists the model and year directly. To confirm the full build details, give the serial to an authorized Volvo dealer.
