Engine, transmission and hydraulics
Read the hours, but remember a well-maintained diesel tractor engine is built to last. Check for leaks, excessive blowby and how it cold-starts. Test the transmission through its ranges, whether it is a gear, shuttle, powershift or hydrostatic drive, and on compact hydrostatics check for weakness climbing under load. Work the hydraulics and the three-point hitch, and if a loader is fitted, check the cylinders, pins and mounts for play and leaks.
PTO, tires and drive
Test the PTO (540 or 1000) and any rear remotes. Check the tires and match them to the job: ag (R1), turf (R3) or industrial (R4). Confirm whether it is two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive (MFWD), and cab vs open station, both affect price and capability. Make sure the ROPS is intact.

What is high hours on a used tractor?
Tractors are built to run long hours, and a well-maintained diesel can go well past what would be high on other equipment. Condition, service history and how it was used matter more than the raw meter.
Is 2WD or 4WD (MFWD) better on a tractor?
Four-wheel drive (MFWD) gives more traction for loader work, tillage and hills, and usually holds more value. Two-wheel drive can be fine for lighter, flatter work and costs less.
Does a loader add value to a tractor?
Yes. A front loader adds real capability and value, especially on compact and utility tractors. Check the loader cylinders, pins and mounts, and confirm it matches the tractor.
